If brick-and-mortar merchants aren’t springing for a mouse, they should be springing for common sense. Otherwise, have you seen the ruins of the Forum in Rome? That’s how some shopping districts will look in a decade or so.
I myself didn’t believe that for a minute, until today. I like to heft, feel, and minutely-inspect what I’m going to buy, and then ask the check-out girl for a date. Internet sales, I thought, would never be much more than glorified catalogue sales. But then— epiphany!
For the umpteenth time I was thinking about my weekend seduction prospects (them seducing me of course) instead of concentrating on my driving, and missed the proper inlet for the store I wanted. Easy to do, with nice shrubs out front to obfuscate the view.
I was only one inlet off, in the parking area of the adjoining business. It being a concentrated commercial area on a busy highway, I decided to look for a connection to the other lot that wouldn’t involve re-entering the highway. I toured the perimeter, wasting time. No luck.
Okay, compare this service with online service. On just about every web site, you are not only permitted, you are song-and-dance begged to link to other sites. Just one easy click on a colorful, seductive banner.
Wouldn’t you rather shop in an environment where you can effortlessly transport yourself to another store— even if it’s across an ocean— rather than one in which you might be only a few yards from a place, yet end up deciding it’s less trouble to park where you are and walk?
If that isn’t enough, think of the money you’ll save by not dating the check-out girl.
